Youth Orchestra Tunes Up!
The Baldwin County Youth Orchestra is in full swing! Our second grant (BCYO was awarded in 2014) enables expansion of the after-school strings program. Children in elementary and middle school take part in the “Strings Academy.” Through this program the children are exposed to the string instruments and musical enrichment. Instruments such as the violin, cello and the double bass give children a chance to experience classical music along with brain development and improved social skills.
Approximately 50 children take part in the after-school strings program, according to LeRoy Hughes, Director of the Baldwin County Youth Orchestra. “No experience is needed. We want to instill lifelong adoration of classical orchestra,” continued Mr. Hughes. The $91,000 grant from Impact 100 Baldwin County provides this experience at no cost to the after- school children. The grant also provides the musical instruments.
The Baldwin County Youth Orchestra is committed to the enhancement of classical music in young people. Along with the after -school intiative, the program also involves advanced orchestra, winds ensemble, beginning band, adult strings, allegro string and chamber strings.
“The after-school program will give a concert on Saturday,May 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Foley Civic Center. We hope everyone can attend and see our musical performance,” said Mr. Hughes. You can find more information at bcyorchestra.com or on the group’s Facebook page.
